Course of 5 Programme structure and further information

This comprises five one-hour sessions with fixed content and an assessment component accredited by the FSRH and taken after completing the e-SRH and fulfilling the course entry requirements. This provides an opportunity to apply the knowledge from the e-SRH to clinical scenarios, and to demonstrate some practical skills. This is part of the DFSRH and taken after the e-SRH and before starting the clinical assessments.

The course is delivered to groups of 4 trainees or less which will ensure there is opportunity to put theoretical knowledge into practice and includes 9 of the assessments for the DFSRH. At least 7 of these must be successfully completed before the trainee can start their clinical sessions.

  • Session 1: Taking a Sexual History and HIV pre test discussion and testing
    Assessment criteria:

    • ‘Has actively and appropriately participated in a workshop discussion of HIV testing and screening’
  • Session 2: STI Screening and Testing and Teaching the use of Condoms
    Assessment criteria:

    • ‘Is able to demonstrate how to perform common investigations for sexually transmitted infections on male and female models’
    • ‘Is able to demonstrate how to teach the use of male condoms’
  • Session 3: Practical Aspects of Contraception
    Assessment criteria:

    • ‘Is able to have an informed discussion on the assessment and management of women choosing barrier methods of contraception and the principles of fitting these methods’
    • ‘Is able to demonstrate the insertion and removal techniques for a currently marketed implant on a model arm’
  • Session 4: Young people; Consent, Confidentiality, Fraser Guidelines and Safeguarding children
    Assessment criteria:

    • ‘Is able to demonstrate that they can apply the principles of confidentiality, Fraser Guidelines, consent and safeguarding children in clinical scenarios’
  • Session 5: Managing Sensitive Scenarios
    Assessment criteria:

    • ‘Has actively and appropriately participated in a discussion on responding to someone presenting with a psycho sexual problem’
    • ‘Has actively and appropriately participated in a discussion on responding to a woman presenting with an unwanted pregnancy’
    • ‘Has actively and appropriately participated in a discussion of the management of men and women who request sterilisation’

DFSRH Programme description

The learning aim for the DFSRH is to be able to practice in sexual and reproductive health. The DFSRH will enable the holder to demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills required to manage community sexual and reproductive health consultations.

The DFSRH course has now changed from the previous 3 day theory course and subsequent practical sessions. From January 2010, all applicants wishing to complete DFSRH follow a new training programme of:

  1. e-SRH (electronic learning package)
  2. Course of five sessions
  3. Clinical experience

To complete the full training for the Diploma of the Faculty (DFSRH) you need to first register with the Faculty. Current cost is £50. This registration will ensure you are allocated, and able to access, your e-portfolio for the Course of 5 and clinical experience elements of the training.
